Role and importance of Port of Bissau in national economy

Port of Bissau is the main business port and holds an important place in the import and export scenario of the country. Located on the west coast of the country, Bissau port is doorway to Europe and Northern America so the trade and investment in Guinea-Bissau are highly depended on it. 

As, the country and its economy are trying hard to overcome its unstable and critical past, Bissau port has a more significant role to play and of course the load and burden on it is increasing with consistent rate.T he entire operation and management of the port is handled under the port authority of Guinea-Bissau. But the demands are rising for private management system for both port administration and equipment handling. Though the government is highly concerned to develop the port, the modernization and technical up-gradation is the other field of foreign investment in Guinea-Bissau.

The scope of reforms is very wide as the container yard has a limited container holding capacity, low capacity of towing and warehousing facility. The efforts are being made to attract the private partnership in providing the basic facilities and increasing the depth of the port. Also, the government is working towards constructing a new port near Bissau with the help of Bauxite Angola which is the leading Angolian mining company.
